Fundamentals in Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching

The objective of this course is to provide an overview of fundamental concepts in Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching and to consolidate the knowledge of the terminology specific to these two disciplines. It is particularly recommended for students who will spend the year in Paris for their Master and who will attend courses in these two subject matters while in France. In linguistics we will study the basic concepts of the different levels of analysis of a language system (phonetics / phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics) as well as explore the main theoretical currents in linguistics and different approaches to the language and its uses (pragmatic, analysis of speech, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics). The second half of the course will provide an overview of the main theories in second language acquisition and a chronological perspective on teaching methodologies. Students will also work on seminal texts on language instruction, language assessment and the CEFR, intercultural competence and plurilingual approach. Class sessions are designed to be hands-on and interactive.
