Students enrolling in this course sequence will have completed at least one semester of Portuguese in a formal classroom setting, and they will typically have a proficiency level equivalent to “Novice-Mid,” according to the ACTFL guidelines of language proficiency. In this class, they will acquire a solid foundation of the basic concepts of the Portuguese language through concise explanations focused on usage, enhancing their lexical and communicative competence, which will allow them to interact in more meaningful ways while using the target language. The material developed for this course contains a considerable amount of exercises with answer keys, aiming at helping students break down their difficulties so that they acquire a reasonable degree of accuracy with confidence, being responsible for their learning process. Through the comprehensive inputs, students start becoming creative with the language, taking initiative to develop communicative exchanges using simple connected discourse. Most students successfully completing this sequence will emerge with a proficiency level of "Intermediate-Mid." Depending on motivation, effort, and previous knowledge some students may progress to a level of "Intermediate-High" during this sequence.
