Latin America and US in 21st Century

Three-week course, first sesión

A profound process of transformation is happening in the western hemisphere as a result of what academics call “pendulum of politics”. Latin America moves from strong political leadership towards a complex and weak political institutions that often fail to create large agreements. Progress is slow because leadership is frequently corroded by corruption and can´t resolve several issues related to citizens’ wellbeing. As a result of that dynamic, people in the region are growing angry and dissatisfied with the institutions, which remain weak and unstable. In this context, changes in the international geopolitical landscape create the opportunity to revamp disputes between neighbors, increase tensions and contradictions in the implementations of politics. If the region remains stable will be as a result of the actions and reaction of the extra-regional great powers and how the United States will recreate new ties in the hemisphere. (.5 unit)
