Senior Seminar in Music: Songs: Folk, Popular, and Classics

In this seminar we will explore the aesthetic issues that surround songs in their many manifestations, including Anglo-American folk ballads, Schubert’s Lieder, commercial songs of Tin Pan Alley, and rock and post-rock song styles. The bedrock of our study will be analysis: the application of theoretical tools to understand how music and text interact. Moreover, as singers and songwriters we will use our own creative efforts to deepen our understanding of various song repertories. With that foundation of close interaction with the musical materials of songs, we will also consider (1) social aspects of the relationships between songs and their writers, singers, and audiences; and (2) the philosophical implications of our perception of different song types, styles, and genres. 3 hrs. lect./disc.
