Mestizaje and Inter Ethnic Relations in Latin American Societies

*Three-week course, first session*

The cultural mestizaje and genetic mixing among the different groups that form Latin American societies are phenomena essential to understanding the founding processes of the peoples and nations in Latin America. The ongoing interactions between cultures coming from Europe and Africa with those of indigenous American peoples have generated hybrid, creole cultures. These hybridizations manifest themselves in different realms: a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual reality of the nations; a diverse and syncretic religious spectrum; and artistic, musical, and literary expressions were traditions.
