Atlas of a Tropical Germany

How did Germany become an immigration country? How has global migration transformed German culture, society, and language over the past half-century? This course will use authentic source texts and artifacts to explore the unpredictable and puzzling itinerary of a nation on its way from ethnonationalism to transculturality. We will consider labor migration, xenophobia and Islamophobia, citizenship discourses, religious identity, institutional multiculturalism, the status of the nation-state, gender and the private sphere, multilinguality, literature, and popular culture.
