Performing Chamber Music

In this course students will play in small ensembles with intensive coaching by the professor and Middlebury College affiliated artists. We will balance practical performance matters with an analysis of the works being performed within the historical perspective. Students will research the biographical details of the composers and the place of the works within the composer's oeuvre. Ensembles to be formed will be limited to the classical repertoire (i.e., no jazz or popular styles) comprising instrumentalists and vocalists. Pre-existing ensembles are welcome. The course will culminate in a public performance. (Ability to play an instrument or sing; Approval required, contact the instructor by April 2nd to set up an audition; be prepared to perform a piece that you know well and have history with as well as a piece you are currently working with). 3 hrs lect./disc.
