Euro-Atlantic Relations

In this course we will examine the history, current condition, and prospective future of US-European relations, focusing primarily on security aspects of that relationship but with reference to political and economic contexts and bilateral ties. Issues covered include the persistent and changing aspects of the “transatlantic bargain”; the impact of 9/11 and the Iraq crisis; NATO’s role in Afghanistan; US-European relations under the Obama administration; NATO enlargement and Russia; relations between NATO, the European Union, and the UN; NATO’s new strategic concept; alternative futures for transatlantic relations.
