Modern East Asia

In this course we will examine developments in East Asia from the 18th-century through World War II. We will consider the "Chinese World Order" as it encompassed Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, and the patterns of European imperialism that led to this order’s demise. We will also examine the rise of Japan as an imperialist power, its "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere," and its 1941-1945 war against the United States. Topics will include the dynamics of nationalist and Pan-Asianist movements, and characteristics of modernity in early 20th -century Shanghai, Taipei, and Tokyo.
