José María Arguedas: Beyond Indigenismo

In this course we will study texts by Peruvian writer José María Arguedas in the context of the indigenista literary and political movement, which aimed to rethink social inequalities in the Andes. Arguedas's writing approaches this topic through powerful linguistic, formal, and theoretical innovation. Among the texts to be read are: Oda al Jet (poetry), Señores e indios (ethnography), Diamantes y pedernales (short stories), Yawar fiesta (short novel), Todas las sangres, and El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo (novels).
