Music in World Cultures

The primary goal of this course will be to broaden our appreciation for and understanding of how music interacts with various aspects of society within selected world cultures. We will explore a variety of non-Western musical genres and styles, paying close attention to their cultural importance in traditional and neo-traditional contexts. To this end, we will read current research, listen to and analyze musical works, write weekly journal responses to our listening experiences and reading assignments, lead and participate in class discussions, and take part in necessary hands-on activities. This course will be open to music majors and others by approval.
