Introduction to Sports Writing

This course will examine sports journalism-the nuts and bolts-as well as the genre’s history and its future. Students will study the various styles of sports writing, from long-form storytelling (in articles, documentaries, and docuseries) to play-by-play coverage, breaking news, and investigative journalism. We will also examine writer bias, sports in society, and look at the role of social media in sports—how it is used by athletes, teams, agents, and reporters. Assignments will include a survey of recent sports stories, critical analysis of these articles, event coverage on deadline, and a long-form project (athlete profile or larger theme). We will also tour Olympic venues and meet with local organizers.
