Marine Policy: Assessing, Governing, and Conserving Our Oceans

Our use of the oceans is complicated, governed by federal, state, and local laws and policies. In this course we will explore the science of oceans and marine ecosystems around the US, the wide range of ocean uses, the laws and policies governing our use of marine space, and the many scientific challenges, different depending on coastal geography, density of human settlement and past management which demand new management approaches. We will use innovative approaches to better understand how people can come together to make hard decisions. Readings will include scientific papers, gray literature, policy briefs, and an online textbook. Assessments include policy briefs, oral presentations, and in-class assessments.
