Russian Language in the Modern World

The course is designed for students interested in contemporary Russian and its functioning across different communities. It focuses on both internal (linguistic) and external (sociolinguistic) features of the language. Students read original texts, prepare presentations, and participate in discussions on various aspects of language policy. The course develops the reading skills needed to understand authentic texts, as well as skills in oral presentation and academic discussion in Russian. It also includes an independent small-scale research project and concludes with a final discussion on the topic: who owns the Russian language today? Counts as a course in language and linguistics.
