Public Art & Art in Community
Public Art & Art in Community: Making, Scale, and Shared Spaces
In this course we will explore public art through construction, work at scale, and collaboration, while developing individual creative practices. Through studio experiments, critiques, readings, site visits, and workshops with visiting studio artists and community partners, we will examine how creative engagement invites agency in shared space. Together, we will design, fabricate, and install a public artwork while learning about funding, budgeting, weather-resistant materials, permissions, and maintenance. Students will propose a speculative public art project and create a scaled prototype demonstrating their skill with a new material, suitable for their proposed site using various sources such as artist interviews, public art case studies, and technical material guides.
