Painting in Oil: Color, Surface, and Image

In this introductory course we will explore color, materiality, and image construction. Students will learn surface preparation, paint handling, color mixing, value, and composition through observational studies and invented images. Collage, drawing, and collected imagery will help us test cropping, scale, layering, and spatial relationships before translating ideas into oil paintings. A color journal, readings, artist studies, demonstrations, and critiques will connect technical practice with color as perception, subject, and culture. Later projects will develop individual approaches to surface and pictorial space. (ART 0156 or ART 0159, or any introductory drawing course.)
