ART 1036A
Site, Place, Location
Site, Place, Location
How does context inform the reception of a sculpture, painting, performance, or installation? In this course we will investigate movements including site specific art, installation art, institutional critique, and environmental or land art. These practices approach site, place, and location as central concerns for a work of art. We will begin by reading recent and historical texts and looking to key artworks from these movements to ground our study. Students will then select a location in the Johnson Building or in close proximity to spend several weeks making a site specific or site responsive work that takes into consideration the physical, historical, psychological, or ecological aspects of that place.
