Writing Modern Love

In this course we will focus on the form of micro-fiction (a short, yet complete story comprised of 300 words or less) and involves a study of the practice of depicting love and relationships in narratives. We will read multiple sections of The New York Times’ “Modern Love” column, as well as excerpts from other traditional texts, in various genres (fiction, poetry and nonfiction). Discussions will include the dynamism of contemporary love, romance and relationships (adoption, polygamy and polyamory, divorce). Students will also produce original writing in response to the readings, to be workshopped in class.
