Chemical Sensors

In this course we will study chemical sensors, which are devices that transduce a chemical analyte into a measurable signal. We will build on analytical concepts introduced in CHEM 0211 such as selectivity, sensitivity, and electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. After studying fundamental sensor structure and characterization, we will investigate different classes of sensors, categorized by transduction method, sample type, and expertise of the end-user. Among the chemical sensors we will explore are the glucometer and the home pregnancy test, as well as novel sensors published in recent research articles. In the lab, students will optimize and characterize a novel sensor with an emphasis on experimental design and data visualization. (CHEM 0211)
