Migration and Gender
Genders and Sexualities of Migration and Justice
In this course students will examine the intersection of migration, gender, and sexuality in the context of social justice. To do so, students will explore how migrants’ experiences are BOTH shaped by gender norms, sexual identity, and legal frameworks as well as HOW their gender, sexual identity, and legal frameworks influence the nature of their migrant journeys. While it is commonly assumed that the experiences of migration are influenced by gender and sexuality there is much less discussion about the ways that gender and sexuality influence migrants’ decisions. By adding the second element, the course ensures that the act of migration as it relates to gender and sexuality doesn’t portray migrants as victims of circumstances but as active agents in their migrant decisions.
