Economic Sociology

Although we interact with money, markets, exchange, and other economic concepts in our day-to-day lives, we seldom interrogate their social construction and cultural variations. In this course we will analyze different dimensions of economic life through the lens of sociology. During the first part of the course, we will examine core ideas in economic sociology, including the embeddedness of markets, gift-giving, and relational work. In the second part, we will explore different empirical studies to consider how boundaries, values, and subjectivities play a role in economic practices like valuation and exchange. Students will have the opportunity to explore a topic of their choice through a final project. (SOCI 0101 or any 200-level SOCI course).
