Modern Latin America
In this survey course we will trace the philosophical, economic, political, and cultural developments in Latin American history from independence to the present day. We will place particular emphasis on the formation of nation-states; issues of development, including labor movements and industrialization; national and cultural symbols; and social relations within Latin American societies. We will investigate the broad background of major themes and issues in Latin American societies that include Mexico, Central America, and South America. We will meet twice per week and there are no prerequisites. We will blend lecture with in-class discussion about a variety of primary and secondary readings.
