Feminism: Global Roots of a Movement

Feminism has been one of the most consequential social movements of the 20th century. It has transformed how we think about gender, race, and sexuality. In this class we will examine how calls for equitable social and political rights have been enacted through and in the media. Centering cultural studies theories we will focus on the representation of women artists; feminist aesthetics through the works of artists featured in the college museum; and contemporary media tropes. We will analyze manifestos seeking to expand education for women as well as how feminists have altered who we study and why. The class will culminate in an exploration of feminist joy. This class is taught in conjunction with Professor Marion Wells’ seminar, FYSE 1139.
