Seminar in Classical Japanese

/Bungo/ (classical Japanese) is essential to understanding Japanese literature and culture. In this seminar students will learn to read classical Japanese texts in the original language. We will study the orthography, vocabulary, and basic structures of pre-modern grammar through close reading of classics from the 9th to the 17th century. Texts for study include Taketori monogatari, the Hôjôki, excerpts from Genji monogatari and Oku no hosomichi. (Approval only) 3 hrs. disc.
