In a rapidly changing world where climate change is forcing society to interact with the environment in new ways and disrupting nearly all facets of society, a shift in environmental leadership is emerging. People, communities, and organizations are driving this transition by fostering collaborative partnerships, building more inclusive policies, and ensuring broad engagement. This course examines environmental leadership across diverse contexts to explore who these leaders are and the strategies they employ. Through case studies, leadership assessments, strategic readings, and insights from guest speakers, we explore key elements of environmental leadership (e.g. establishing trust, building collaborative partnerships, and incorporating diverse perspectives). Students will also reflect on their own leadership potential, creating communication pieces such as leadership statements and op-eds to hone their skills. Overall, the course aims to empower participants to think more broadly about environmental leadership, and provide them with tools to develop their own leadership strengths to foster the solutions needed for a just and sustainable future for the planet and people.
