Civilization Methodology: History, Political Science and Philosophy; France: a Nation of Rebellion

Revolutions, revolts, social movements, strikes, and street demonstrations are all part of the classic landscape of French history. These numerous episodes explain the diversity of political regimes that France has experienced: absolute monarchy, constitutional monarchy, parliamentary republic, Bonapartist empire, and presidential republic. French history is thus characterized by instability and a high level of conflict. Yet, a democratic regime based on freedoms and human rights managed to establish itself during the 19th and 20th centuries. So, which tendency is stronger: Revolution or Reform, Barricades or Elections?

This course is open to everyone. No prior knowledge of history is required. It will serve as a basis for learning the methodology of the humanities, following these steps: text comprehension, text commentary, general essay writing, and individual presentations.
