Academic Writing in Italian: Methods and Techniques for Composition
This course focuses on the development of academic writing skills in Italian, with particular emphasis on the structure of the short essay and the compositional techniques that underpin effective written communication. Through an inductive methodology, students analyze model texts to discover and internalize the principles of academic writing, applying them in practice through individual and collaborative exercises including peer review and group writing activities.
The course guides students systematically through each stage of the writing process: brainstorming and idea selection, research and source evaluation, outline creation, first draft composition, and final revision and editing. Grammar review is integrated into every session, covering key topics such as subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, direct and indirect pronouns, and the subjunctive and conditional moods, ensuring that linguistic accuracy develops alongside compositional skill.
By the end of the course, students will be able to master the structure of the short academic essay, apply the stages of the writing process with confidence, evaluate and incorporate sources appropriately, and develop effective editing and proofreading strategies. Assessment is based on weekly grammar exercises (10%), participation and online discussions (40%), and written composition projects (50%).
