The Other Italian
The Other Italian: Language Debates and Social Factors from the Fifteenth Century to the Present
This course explores the historical evolution of the Italian language through the lens of social, political, religious, and economic forces. Rather than focusing solely on literary debates, the course highlights how broader societal dynamics (such as power structures, religious institutions, economic change, and the publishing market) have shaped linguistic norms and controversies over time. By examining key moments from the fifteenth century to today, students gain a deeper understanding of how language both reflects and influences social realities in Italy.
