Narrative Quilting

In this course we will explore the narrative potential of quilts through hands-on making, historical research, material experimentation, and conceptual exploration. We will approach quilting as a craft practice and cultural medium through which artists have explored themes of storytelling, identity, labor, and repair. Students will examine historical and contemporary quilts, considering how artists have used textiles to communicate personal and collective narratives. Readings, discussions, and museum visits will contextualize quilting within broader histories of craft and contemporary art. Students will learn foundational design principles and technical quilting skills. Each student will design and produce a series of quilted panels that will form a visual narrative when quilted together at the end of the course.



Chloe Wilwerding is a mixed-media artist based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She holds an MFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design and graduated from Middlebury in 2015. She has exhibited nationally while teaching at institutions including RISD and Montserrat College of Art.
