Extending Financial Services to the Unbanked

In this course we will explore different tools and interventions that extend financial services to the unbanked poor. Using examples drawn from the field in developing countries and guest speakers, we will look at the use of microfinance, microinsurance, and digital financial services to achieve the goal of financial inclusion. We will use this knowledge base in partnership with a local migrant-worker services organization to gain insight into the financial practices of workers as they navigate the financial landscape in Addison County. Through the creation of financial diaries, we will strive to gain understanding and propose improvements to current practices. This course is a member of the Mellon Foundation Public Humanities Labs Initiative on Migration.



Elizabeth Toder began her international development adventure as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand 30 years ago and most recently served as the US Treasury Department’s Resident Advisor in Madagascar, advising the Ministry of Finance and Central Bank on financial inclusion. She is the current Vice President of Habitat for Humanity Addison County’s Board.
