Coaching & Leadership in Sports

In this course we explore coaching as a leadership practice shaping athletes from youth through college. Students examine coaching philosophy, team culture development, communication, and leadership. Emphasis is placed on the environments coaches create and how they navigate adversity. The course is applied and discussion-based, drawing on case studies, readings, and insights from guest speakers across the sports industry. Students are expected to engage consistently, reflect on their leadership identity, and translate ideas into practical coaching behaviors. Coursework includes regular readings, short reflections, interactive exercises, and the development of a personal coaching portfolio. The course culminates in a group presentation where students investigate a coaching topic and demonstrate its application in real-world settings.
