Characteristics of Modern Levantine Society *



This course addresses the social and political issues reflected in the literature that has been written in the Levant states: Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine in: poetry, prose, drama, and press, since the first half of the 20th century. Students will study these issues, which are expressed in the literature through the main joints like: the national vigilance, political literary associations, press, the issue of women's liberation and the literary manifestations of successive political events. These events include: the Balfour Declaration, the fall of the Levant states under the French and British Mandate, the Nakba of Palestine, the Camp David Accord, the Tishreen War, and the Palestinian Intifada. In addition, the impact of the Second Gulf War on national identity, the reality of these countries in the first decade of the new millennium, and the emergence of Arab Spring movements will also be addressed
