<strong>Elena Ferrante and Other Contemporary Women Writers</strong><br />

The course will explore the literature of contemporary women authors including: Elena Ferrante (Napoli, 1953), Paola Mastrocola (Torino, 1956), Susanna Tamaro (Trieste, 1957), Melania Mazzucco (Roma, 1966), Michela Murgia (Cabras, 1972) and Chiara Gamberale (Roma, 1977). Particular attention will be paid to their most significant works which will be selected and presented as an anthology of texts including: L’amica geniale, La gallina volante, Va’ dove ti porta il cuore, Un giorno perfetto, Il mondo deve sapere, Accabadora, Una vita sottile, Per dieci minuti. Themes that will be explored include: love and friendship, seduction and abandonment, mental illness and suicide, the dynamics between sex and domestic violence, motherhood (both biological and by adoption), schooling and the professional world. The course aims to explore these themes from a feminine perspective regarding Italy, it’s history and it’s people.
