3302 French Phonetics

In mastering a foreign language, nothing is more important than learning to pronounce the sounds, words, phrases, and utterances so as to be understood by native speakers. Though smooth, flowing, elegant, musical and so romantic, the French language sounds also untamable with, for example, its unpronounceable “r,” its nasal vowels and its liaisons. This course provides in-depth exposure of how French sounds correspond to the writing system. French pronunciation is articulated with the phonetic symbols of the International Phonetic Association (IPA) so that the student is able to decode the phonemic transcriptions found in French dictionaries as well as in other language dictionaries.
