Hispanic Music Heritage: Cultural Interrelations

This course will allow the student to appreciate the importance of music and tradition in the history of Hispanic cultures. We shall approach the current musical and historic panorama of Spain and Latin American countries by examining its origins and the different esthetic currents, taking the mid-19th Century as our starting point. Listening will be the central line of this course, which covers the fields of popular and classical music. By analyzing styles, rhythms, dances, and songs, we shall understand how materials were shared and how music became transformed across the Ocean by adapting to the different social and cultural Hispanic contexts.
