Reading Fiction is a course designed to sharpen your critical reading skills and deepen your appreciation of literature. The art of writing begins with reading, and in this class, students engage with masterworks of fiction from various periods and cultures to uncover the craft behind compelling storytelling. Through close reading and discussion, students will learn to interpret fiction, identify themes, analyze character development, and recognize narrative techniques and stylistic choices. Central to our exploration is the concept of human content—the emotion, drama, and insight that fiction conveys, offering readers a deeper understanding of life and human nature. We will examine how accomplished authors create powerful, believable worlds that move us and challenge our perspectives. This course lays the foundation for strong creative writing by teaching students how to read not just as consumers, but as emerging writers, learning from the literary masters who came before them.
