Performing Chamber Music

In this course students will explore the art of collaborative music making in the classical tradition. Weekly ensemble coaching sessions and scheduled master classes will develop group dynamics, rehearsal techniques, and interpersonal aspects of musical collaboration. Additional emphasis will be on issues particular to string instruments. Students will form ensembles of 2–6 players at the beginning of the semester, primarily targeting intermediate to advanced string performers but with some space for a small number of piano or wind instrument players. Established ensembles may also enroll. Repertoire will be determined in collaboration with instructor. The course will culminate in at least one end-of-term performance and writing assignment. Advanced music reading is required. Previous chamber music experience is not required. 3 hrs. lect/disc.
