Modern Chinese Spoken Drama: Page and Stage

In this course we will read selected works of spoken drama (huaju) and discuss the historical, cultural and aesthetic conditions out of which this modern Chinese theatrical form developed. As we study the history of huaju and read representative texts, we will also rehearse and perform a short Chinese play. This course is for students of Mandarin who have completed CHNS 0201 or above. Discussion will be in Chinese and English; readings and written work may be done in either language; the play will be performed in both. (CHNS 0201 or approval of the instructor.)
