Performing Jazz

In this course we will explore language, idiom, and improvisation in the mainstream and bop traditions of jazz. Classwork will focus on repertoire, jazz theory, and approaches to improvisation. Students will play in combos subject to safe distancing requirements or the limitations of the course web platform. Coursework will include written analyses, class presentations, transcription exercises, and self-recording, anchored by independent listening and practice time. Instrumental or vocal proficiency is required; previous jazz experience is not. Basic theory knowledge and the ability to sight read will be helpful. (Instructor approval) 3 hrs. lect/disc.
