Visual Narratives: Exploring the Medium of Monographs
Through a cohesive visual narrative, an author can enhance the meaning of their work by offering valuable perspective and contextual insight that might otherwise remain unexplored. Monographs serve as a critical medium for developing this visual narrative. In this course we will explore the format and purpose of monographs through architectural, curatorial, and artistic case studies. We will study design principles and graphic techniques that strengthen the intersection of imagery and text. Students are required to enter this course with a previously completed project or body of work (this could be an essay, research project, architectural design, or artwork). They will focus on enhancing these projects with descriptive text, critical responses, visual documentation, and proper citation. The course will provide instruction in the use of InDesign and book publication techniques. Each student will ultimately design and produce a physical monograph that showcases their work.
