Mapping Terrain
Mapping Terrain
Representing the Earth’s three-dimensional surface on a flat map is a timeless problem in cartography. In this course we will first compare different cartographic methods to represent terrain across a transect of geographic situations and scales, including coastal, river, and mountain landscapes. We will then explore geographic models that can be derived from digital elevation data, including viewshed and watershed models. Through case studies, problem sets, and local field trips, we will critique workflows that employ geographic information systems, graphics software, some coding, and field observations, leading to the development of a final project and poster presentation. (One GEOG course or by waiver). 3 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. lab.
