Geocinema: Earth, Science, and Society at the Movies

In this seminar we examine how popular films depict the Earth system, natural hazards, and climate change, and what these portrayals reveal about science, society, and power. Together we will develop skills in evaluating scientific accuracy and communicating science effectively, and analyze themes including risk perception, preparedness, representation, and responsibility. Topics include planetary structure, climate dynamics, seismic and volcanic hazards, evolution of life, and Earth science research methods. Students' sources will span from blockbuster disaster films to scientific research articles. Analytical and creative investigation of course material will develop through scientific writing and discussion and culminate in the creation of short screenplays.
