Collage as Painting

In this intensive studio course we will explore collage as a way of making and thinking through painting. Working with painted papers, found images, drawings, and acrylic paint, students will investigate color, composition, surface, and the meanings of collected materials. Exercises in cutting, layering, rearranging, and painting will move from color studies to reassembled figures and independent works. Image lectures, artist interviews, demonstrations, and critiques will connect studio experiments with historical and contemporary practices, including Romare Bearden, Wangechi Mutu, and Tschabalala Self. Students will develop a process notebook and a final collage-painting. No prior experience required.
