Introduction to Swahili and East African Culture

In this course we will introduce students to the Swahili language and East African culture. We will cover Swahili structures, including alphabet, vowels, spelling, pronunciation drills, and basic sentence patterns for daily use, such as greetings, inviting someone to dinner, talking about hobbies, etc. By the end of the course, students will be expected to know the basic sound system and simple sentence structures to conduct daily conversation in simple Swahili and be familiar with the East African culture. This course counts as elective credit towards the African Studies minor.
