Ego, Self, Selfie

How does the body impact our lived experience? How does our lived experience impact the body? In this first-year seminar, we will explore the ego, the self, and the selfie through historical and contemporary works of art combined with readings about various artists, including Alice Neel, Tim Hawkinson, Kiki Smith, and David Hammons. Students will also engage with the process of writing and art making to examine our relationship to the body and ourselves. Specifically, we will interpret depictions of the self by examining our interior notions and exterior projections through unconventional drawing exercises, iterative writing assignments, and the collaborative discussions of our writings and art making.
