Prejudice Reduction
Psychological Approaches to Prejudice Reduction
In this course we will discuss a variety of different psychological interventions that have been tested to reduce prejudice. Through lecture, discussion, and activities, students in this seminar will learn about intervention approaches such as direct and indirect intergroup contact, empathy/perspective-taking, and re-categorization. Students will also learn about topics that are not commonly addressed in the prejudice reduction literature (e.g., perspective of a stigmatized target) and next steps in prejudice reduction research. A focus will be placed on replication, effect sizes, and the file drawer problem throughout the semester. By the end of the course, students will come up with their own intervention aimed at reducing prejudice. (PSYC 0105) PSYC majors only, 3 hrs. sem.
