Cities have a key role to play in the transition towards sustainability. All over the world, cities are rapidly expanding and experiencing radical social and economic transformations, generating both complex challenges and new opportunities. This workshop focuses on emergent approaches and models to address some of the key environmental challenges connected with the provision of basics services (e.g. mobility, food, housing, energy, water) in dynamic urban communities. Using examples from cities in Europe and elsewhere, the workshop explores specific cases of green urban strategies and analyzes their social, economic and environmental implications both locally and globally. The workshop will briefly highlight multi-level governance and coordination challenges, and provide discussion points on the role of bottom-up institutional and social innovations enabling green urban transformation.
