This one-unit workshop will introduce students to the major themes of international relations in the information age, focusing in particular on the ways in which information and communication technologies (ICT) have introduced new complexities to the policy and practice of defense, diplomacy and development. Course themes include cyber- and other non-traditional security threats; soft power; diplomacy in an age of transparency; the impact of traditional and new media on political transition and political change; ICT for development; and the new dynamics of conflict. In addition to readings, the class will examine case studies and engage in role play/simulations to explore the concepts presented.
