This course is designed as part of the collaboration efforts among MIIS language studies programs namely Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish to support students’ learning about the various aspects of the migration process across the international borders. The course will provide an overview of labor migration, human rights, humanitarian law and the role of reginal and international organizations. It will also shed light on the contributions of NGOs and the linkage between migration and development. Topics to be discussed will include the recent crises of refugees in Europe, migration across Latin American borders, immigrants’ (new) identity and their integration in the host country and the impact of migration on domestic industries and local businesses. The influence of globalization, demographic shifts, reginal and international conflicts on the future of migration will also be among the topics to be presented and discussed in this course. Besides the daily class meetings, there will be three plenary sessions where students from the four programs meet to share their experiences and provide their input on the common course themes. To ensure the use of target language, T&I service will be available during the plenary sessions as well as the guest speakers’ series.
