Globally the impact of gun violence on development is well-documented. The United Nations has now identified this in Sustainable Development Goal 16. The UNODC has a mandate to reduce and prevent illicit arms trafficking, based on the Firearms Protocol of the Convention on Transnational Crime. This course will complete three projects over the semester. First, we will conduct a literature review for describing gun violence: its effects, causes and a meta analysis of prevention and reduction programs. Second, we will evaluate a gun violence prevention and reduction program. Third, we will develop a curriculum and teaching materials on gun violence for the UNODC Education for Justice Project. The instructor is a member of the UNODC Experts Group responsible for developing this curriculum.
